When I went to the last Farm Stand of the season two weeks ago, I had to dodge traffic on the paved road next to the school and sneak past football, track, soccer and marching band practice on my way to the ramp since school was in session. It's sad to see the Farm Stand end for this year, Growing Places Indy has big plans for expansion next year and want to put a you-pick plot right in front of Legacy Center. This BathroomFarmer is looking forward to that out-in-the-yard-in-all-kinds-of-weather gardening experience.Laura Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00097297825057132658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475344179251683905.post-65602942750490354932013-02-08T12:19:24.714-08:002013-02-08T12:19:24.714-08:00Besides that, my junk blender needs something to d...Besides that, my junk blender needs something to do in the seed-bomb-making off season. ;)Laura Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00097297825057132658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475344179251683905.post-70364087704282257432013-02-08T12:17:09.064-08:002013-02-08T12:17:09.064-08:00Indeed coffee grounds are a source of nitrogen, to...Indeed coffee grounds are a source of nitrogen, too. Roses and tomatoes have similar needs so whatever works for one will work for the other. I've read a LOT of references about adding eggshells and coffee grounds to tomatoes but the smoothie idea is my own addition to the plan. Many smaller particles would have a larger total surface area and leach more nutrients faster, I reckon - by applying basic science. So far results are showing.Laura Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00097297825057132658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475344179251683905.post-362787586926336652013-02-08T12:04:14.339-08:002013-02-08T12:04:14.339-08:00Yo! Living sustainably means better managing personal resources including space. My bathroom is giant and I've been using part of the space as an office! It's really pleasant to have the plants growing in here. I'm looking forward to having many more growing at once but this has been more ambitious than I had anticipated. I am certain my garden has an abundant future! Although the peat moss and perlite were not available within walking distance from home, I did find them at Amazon.com which has everything. And because my goal is to keep this project VERY low cost, I'm happy to say I acquired the products free. I found a way to earn Amazon gift certificates answering surveys online. It would be 100% possible for someone to earn enough to buy most of the materials to make a simple garden that way! Plus, the stuff shows up at your door! Persons needing year 'round fresh foods the most in America are low income urban dwellers and I'm trying to design this project with them in mind first. The challenges I'm working through will just make this project much easier to replicate so I am very grateful for them.Laura Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00097297825057132658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475344179251683905.post-91830676843002967492011-11-19T22:24:40.153-08:002011-11-19T22:24:40.153-08:00Have to agree with you on the soil mixture the mor...Have to agree with you on the soil mixture the more air the better. I suspect the dollar store dirt is the culprit since the light and the temperature are now under control. The soil is extremely dense. I just ordered peat moss and vermiculite from Amazon and it should be coming any day. I will fluff up the dirt and see if that helps.

It is crazy that the herbs and greens fail and the vines are wildly growing. I think it's because the vines have strong deep roots and can penetrate the soil better. I have a tomato plant in a gallon milk jug and it's over five feet long. None of the tomatoes have bloomed though even though the melons responded to the light adjustment. I am going to cut off the suckers next and see that should help. The melons are blooming all male flowers but I read that is normal behavior for them and will make female flowers, too, later. My cucumbers did exactly that and I do think I have properly pollinated those and will have fruits maturing.Laura Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00097297825057132658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475344179251683905.post-10653160037376085462011-10-05T16:22:37.484-07:002011-10-05T16:22:37.484-07:00Have you found that vine growing plants do well in...Have you found that vine growing plants do well in containers and space versus small bushy plants like herbs?artCainhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15606773001271642960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475344179251683905.post-15340890879387658912011-09-14T19:53:14.038-07:002011-09-14T19:53:14.038-07:00I would like to see a new trend of space in buildi...I would like to see a new trend of space in buildings, particularly residential buildings, being designed specifically for growing plants. The 1892 house I live in was built with a plant stand to optimize light exposure with tall windows and has a lead heat retaining surface. It would be very cool in the 21st century to have a similar space with solar-powered light and warming surfaces. There is huge interest in my BathroomFarm project and many good reasons to encourage indoor growing in these modern times. There isn't much information about doing this sort of thing, though. Hopefully, I am adding some practical information to make this simple for everyone.Laura Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00097297825057132658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475344179251683905.post-22418668599698424592011-09-04T16:52:06.729-07:002011-09-04T16:52:06.729-07:00Cool! This is a great time to think about creating indoor grow rooms and vertical gardens in particular because there is a lot of new information and products evolving to make this work. I'm sure you're already looking at your bathroom differently! Since you have the luxury of an unused tub, you might check out backyardfishfarm.com because they are into hydroponic systems of herbs, vegetables and fish. I thought about trying that in my own space because I share a giant house and can use other bathrooms but the fantasy of lounging in a hot, bubbly tub in the dead of winter and snacking on fresh fruits and vegetables was overwhelming! It's "very Hollywood c. 1940s" to have a garden in the loo!Laura Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00097297825057132658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475344179251683905.post-80534457811158210822011-08-07T08:55:01.138-07:002011-08-07T08:55:01.138-07:00Wow! In a momentary lapse of sanity, I did consider turning my bathtub into a tiny fish farm, but I like the idea of soaking in a hot bubbly tub in the dead of winter and eating fresh fruits and vegetables off the vine 1940s Hollywood style. This house was built in 1892 so the loo is roomy (lest ladies get wedged in with their voluminous dresses). Since the doorway into the library has been sealed on the side of the bathroom opposite the bathroomfarm, I have enough space for a little office. It's a good thing because it's the only place this far back in the house that the WiFi works!Laura Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00097297825057132658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475344179251683905.post-90239230703516970462011-07-31T17:08:45.424-07:002011-07-31T17:08:45.424-07:00Love this. I got the toilet paper roll core idea from PLANETPALS. She also suggested the egg carton method. I got the idea for a pad to retain moisture on the bottom and plastic wrap on the top from the designs of many seed starting trays. I think it would be great to have those BUT I wanted to keep BathroomFarm simple and accessible. The problem with so many projects is that they get too expensive too quickly.

I have my pots on standby for transplanting. I will move them into the bathroom in mid-June because of renovations being done now.

Gardening is a great projects for kids! I'm amazed that so many adults do not know the NAMES of vegetables so how they grow must be a mystery to them. I had a tiny outdoor garden when I was little. I really liked that but I remember getting into a little bit of trouble because I dug up the carrots to 'see how they were doing' and tried to replant them!
